On Saturday, February 22 Greenburgh Public Library will host a visit from our very own award winning, nationally recognized, children’s author and illustrator Eric Velasquez. This year, Mr. Velasquez is one of three authors chosen for One Book Westchester, a literacy initiative focused on local authors who highlight the history of our county, as well as celebrate its diversity and shared vision of a better life. Mr. Velasquez, a Hartsdale resident, details the immigrant experience through his beautiful illustrated books -  many written in Spanish as well as English.

“Becoming an artist was a natural choice for me. I have never thought of being anything else.”

- Eric Velasquez

Mr. Velasquez’s rich and unique cultural perspective may be attributed to his Afro-Puerto Rican heritage and experiences growing up in New York City’s Harlem. His mother strongly encouraged his love for doodling and drawing, his grandmother inspired his love of music, and his father inspired his love of film. All of these influences can be seen in Eric's work.

Mr. Velasquez’s work has earned him an NAACP Image award (Our Children Can Soar), a Pura Belpre Award for illustration (Grandma's Gift), a Walter Award (Schomburg: The Man Who Build a Library), the SCBWI Golden Kite Award (Schomburg: The Man Who Build a Library), the International Latino Award Honor (Schomburg: The Man Who Build a Library), a Bank Street Best Children's Book of the Year honor (Looking for Bongo).

Mr. Velasquez will be sharing stories and demonstrating his fabulous illustration style on Saturday, February 22 at 2 pm as part of One Book Westchester. Refreshments will be served as part of this special visit. We hope that you will join us for this exciting event ! Look out for more One Book Westchester events on their Facebook page (One Book/Westchester)!
