Job Tips in the Virtual World: Working From Home

You've aced the interview and got the job! Now you can start preparing for your first day...working from home. It might feel a bit intimidating to work from home, but there are a few things you can start with that will help you be successful from day one!

  1. Make yourself a workspace - Even though you may not be in your normal environment, create a separate area that is designated just for you to work. This will help you create a work/life separation. Anything that can signify that you are “at work” will help such as a coffee mug, pictures or even Post it notes around your screen!

  2. Make a schedule - Even though working from home might not be your “normal” making  a schedule can help you get into the groove of a work day. This will also remind you to take breaks during the day. Taking breaks allows your mind and body to recharge and increase your productivity.

  3. Use tools to increase productivity - If you need an extra push to keep you on schedule and help you manage your time wisely, there are online tools and apps that can help! Here are a few that can help you stay on target: Remember the Milk, Toggl, Mindnode and Pocket.

  4. Dress for success - Pajamas and loungewear are comfortable, but they don’t scream professional. Even though you may not be seeing colleagues in person, it’s always best to look presentable and professional on camera. It will also help you separate work life from home life.

  5. Communication is key - Although virtual communication channels have become the new normal, there’s instant messaging, texting and phone conversations, there is nothing like stopping by a co-worker’s office to chat and update each other throughout the day. Be sure to take time out of your day to check in with co-workers, even if it is just to say hello and catch up.
