Library Service & Kindness

Most librarians are familiar with the phenomenon of being in a store, at a park, or on the street and having strangers ask them questions.  The questions can range from simple directions to an opinion about products for sale, to a suggestion for a good nearby restaurant.   There may be dozens of people around but it seems librarians invariably get picked out of the crowd to be the one to ask for help.

I’ve often wondered if this happens so frequently because librarians simply look like they know things or where to find answers, or if it is because we simply look approachable.  Most likely it is a combination of those things, but I also think a lot has to do with the fact that our work as librarians is based upon an inherent service ethic.  Our public service is based on the belief that libraries exist to better our communities and provide opportunities for individuals to grow and learn.  Our work is to help.

At its core, library service is a kindness.  I believe those employed in libraries engage in kindness every day as they help people gather information, teach internet searching skills, provide story times for toddlers, direct students to the best resources, put together programs of interest, and recommend a favorite book to read.  Librarians accept all points of view and do not judge anyone who approaches them seeking assistance.  In our fractious times, that is no small thing.

As a way to recognize the many kindnesses that make a difference in the lives of so many, we will be celebrating Kindness Week beginning September 9.  We will continue to practice kindness in our daily connections with and service to our library users, but we will also provide opportunities to collaborate, create and celebrate kindness in distinctive and different ways.  Check our calendar of events and choose kindness!
