Stay-cation Unplugged: Indoor Activities

Stuck inside during this pandemic? I think we all pretty much are at this point, and we haven’t quite hit the peak. That means there’s plenty more time at home to enjoy being with your family, or getting that alone time you crave. There have been copious ideas put out there about taking a virtual vacation and things to do on the Internet, but what if you just want to unplug for a while?

Here are 10 things you can do at home right now:

Read a book or listen to an audiobook: I listened to my first audiobook when I was at the end of elementary school when my mom was fading out reading to me before bedtime. Sometimes we would take turns reading the Harry Potter series aloud, and eventually we started listening to the audiobooks by Jim Dale together. We would sit on the bed with the physical book in our lap and read along while Jim read to us. That is always a fond memory that I’ll have of my childhood.

Play puzzles, board games or card games: Dust off those old board games in the back of your closet and re-read the rules to get a refresher. Do you have Clue? Sorry? Pictionary? What about that 1,000 piece puzzle you’ve been meaning to finish? Don’t forget about card games, which you can play a host of with just a plain ol’ deck of cards. Go Fish anyone?

Knit or crochet: If you’ve set aside a knitting or crocheting project, now would be the best time to pick it up again. Maybe you’ve been meaning to finish that blanket for your newborn grandson who is now five years old, or have been looking at one sock for so long now that you forgot you needed to make its mate.

Start a journal: You can write poetry, make a to do list for the day, write about your feelings (we all know these have been some trying times) or write a letter to your cousin. Who knows? Maybe you’ll actually want to send it!

Write thank you notes to essential workers: Speaking of letter writing, there has been much talk about signing up to be a penpal for folks at nursing homes, but what about writing a thank you note to a nurse, plumber or grocery store worker whose jobs are essential right now, and who still have to show up for work every day?

Practice an instrument: If your music teacher has been getting on your case, why don’t you pick up that instrument and practice? You can rehearse that song you’ve been meaning to master for some time now, or tackle a completely new piece. You know what they say, practice, practice, practice!

Create a day at the spa:
First, put on some calming music and light some scented candles. Then put on your slippers and a robe, and get to work! Paint your nails, give yourself a pedicure and don a face mask (the moisturizing kind).

Organize, organize, organize!: Now that you’re relaxed from that day at the spa, why not do some organizing and purging to make your house look as good as you feel?  Match up Tupperware lids with their proper bottoms, throw out expired medication and old makeup, or go through your closet and try on clothes you haven’t worn in a year and donate them.

Bake or cook: Dust off those old cookbooks and whip up an old favorite or try a new recipe. How about those cookies your grandma always made during the holidays? These times are uncertain, so why not go for some comfort food?

Host a dance party: Blast your favorite music (but not too loud, or the neighbors might complain), and get the dance party started! Switch it up by picking music from back in the day, or find some new tunes to learn while letting loose.

I hope you've found these suggestions helpful, and will try them out. Look for my next blog post on outdoor activities!
