The Greenburgh Public Library has a robust volunteer (VolunTeen) program for teens ages 12-19. In 2018 the library boasted over 300 generous and dedicated individuals who volunteered their time, skills, and energy to serve their community -- over 4,100 hours worth!

How long have you been volunteering at Greenburgh Public Library?

Two and a half years

Why do you volunteer at the library?

I enjoy learning how the library works and I want to serve my community.

What kinds of events have you volunteered for?

I have volunteered at many previous lock-ins (a teen after hours event), arts and crafts oriented events, and science oriented events. I have also helped with many children's programs including book buddies, book club, and storytimes.

What ongoing tasks have you done for the library?

I have done tech help, self-checkout help, and teen desk help.

How often do you generally volunteer?

Generally I volunteer once or twice a week for 2-4 hours total. This summer I am interning 5 days a week at the library helping with all kinds of projects and events.

What is your favorite part of volunteering at the library?

I enjoy helping with the variety of programs offered at the library and learning many new things from running these programs.

What is the most valuable thing you have learned from working at the library?

The most valuable thing I have learned is how to interact with the general public, by helping with computer problems and sitting at the information desk. I have learned how to properly greet people but also make sure our interactions are pleasant.

How many hours have you accumulated over the course of volunteering at the library?

I have over 263 hours as of right now.

How have your interactions with library staff and other volunteers been?
I find that all the interactions I’ve had have been generally positive. I have worked well with the majority of volunteers and all the interactions I have had with library staff, regardless of how complex, have gone well. I have successfully completed the tasks asked of me in a timely fashion and with good quality.

Do you think you will continue to volunteer at the library as a volunteen until you age out of the program?

I plan to be a volunteen until I age out and am no longer eligible. After I age out I plan to find other volunteering opportunities for the Greenburgh Public Library to continue my service here.
