Yearbooks: Windows to the Past

by Megan Fenton on 2018-08-14T10:00:00-04:00 | 0 Comments

In the past week several patrons have stopped by the Information Desk inquiring about our collection of yearbooks in the Local History Room. I’m not from around here so I can’t relive my high school days with our collection here at the library, but it prompted me to spend a good part of my Sunday afternoon perusing my personal collection and remembering those carefree days of my youth….. A photo of my relay team at a swim meet, our junior play Pippin, and our anatomy and physiology lab class-- all moments I had almost forgotten about again brought to the foreground. I still keep in touch with a few of the individuals in those pictures, but I’m now wondering where some of the others are today and what their lives are like after so many years.

Yearbooks can be a window into our past, reminding of us of some of our greatest triumphs and also some of our greatest challenges as young people. They are also a window into the collective experience of the students in our communities during different eras of history, and what it might have been like to come of age at a specific school during a specific time.

Are you an alumni of a local school interested in taking a peek back into your past? The library’s Local History collection contains the following yearbook titles (see below). If you are interested in taking a look at one, you can visit the Information Desk in the Adult Department where a librarian can assist you (be sure to bring a library card or ID to use the materials).

If you don’t see your high school or the year you are looking for listed here, try contacting the school directly, they often keep copies of yearbooks in the school library. If you happen to have an extra copy of a yearbook from any of the above mentioned high schools and would like to donate it please email Nancy Larrabee (nlarrabee@greenburghlibrary.org), we are missing some years and you could help complete the collection!
