About GPL
History
The Greenburgh Public Library was granted its charter on August 24, 1962, to provide library service to the residents of unincorporated Greenburgh, which includes portions of Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Elmsford, Hastings, Irvington and Tarrytown. The first library opened in rented rooms in a building on Dobbs Ferry Road.
In 1968, an 18,900 square foot building was completed in a central location on Tarrytown Road to better serve the public. At that time, we served a population of about 18,500 people. Presently, we serve a population of 43,000 people, who reside in 10 separate school district areas of the unincorporated portions of the Town of Greenburgh. The library has a collection of more than 213,000 items, including books, periodicals, DVDs, videos, CDs, audio books, and downloadable material. Greenburgh Library is the fifth largest member of the thirty eight libraries of the Westchester Library System.
In early 2009, the Library completed a renovation and expansion project which doubled the size of the building, allowing the library to expand services.

Administration
The Director implements the policies of the Board and carries out the day-to-day administrative tasks while preparing for long range growth of the Library.

This new plan charts Greenburgh Public Library’s course for the next five years and beyond. It will serve as a vision for the future of the library. The plan will provide cohesive direction with specific strategies to ensure GPL patrons experience exceptional 21st century library service.
