Knitting injuries are for real

by Eugenie Contrata on 2018-11-09T15:56:00-05:00 | 0 Comments

Much to my orthopedists surprise, I truly injured myself by knitting too much.  I am not the only one with a knitting injury. Author and avid knitter Chloe Benjamin describes her journey from knitting pain to recovery, in a post from Martha Stewart's webpage. Chloe Benjamin was fortunate to work with physical therapist and knitter Carson Demers. Carson appeared in a video podcast from Fruity Knitting.

Liat Gat of KnitFreedom has a blog post and video tutorial on maintaining proper back posture to avoid knitting pain. Another good place for knitting tips is Allfreeknitting.com, which has a post of 29 Tips for Avoiding Knitting Pain. I really like these tips because they were submitted by other knitters, like Becky C. , who suggested, When you get to the end of a row of a bigger project, rotate your wrists once counterclockwise and once clockwise. If it is a smaller project, do the same thing after 5 rows. Such a simply way to prevent problems by adopting this habit. Another poster to AllFreeKnitting.com makes a very good point about using circular needles instead of long straight needles for projects with lots of stitches. Remember you don't have to knit in the round to make use of circular needles.

If you don't have a lot of time, watch this quick video on hand and wrist stretches for knitters from Loveknitting.com.

Good luck avoiding, managing and resolving your knitting pain. I start physical therapy for rotator cuff tendonitis soon.

Happy Knitting,

Genie
