PLA Digital Literacy Workshop, Supported by AT&T

Greenburgh Public Library among 215 libraries nationwide to conduct digital literacy trainings funded by PLA Digital Literacy Workshop Incentive, supported by AT&T

[GREENBURGH, NY] — The Greenburgh Public Library is among 215 public libraries nationwide awarded funding by the Public Library Association (PLA) this year to conduct digital literacy workshops using new Digitallearn.org resources. The PLA Digital Literacy Workshop Incentive, supported by AT&T, provides support to libraries of all sizes to conduct workshops using DigitalLearn training materials on up to 8 topics designed to help patrons build skills and confidence using technology.

Greenburgh Public Library conducted over 75 one-on-one technology appointments with patrons and 33 group technology classes between 2022 and 2023. Funding through the PLA Digital Literacy Workshop Incentive will allow the library to conduct more technology and computer classes for our patrons on highly requested topics and purchase necessary equipment to conduct workshops, upgrade equipment, and hire trainers to conduct workshops. Workshops will cover basic technology skills and topics such as Internet Basics, Video Conferencing Basics, Cybersecurity Basics, Email Basics, Computer Basics (Windows and MacOS), and Mobile Device Basics (Android and iOS). Workshops will be conducted in English and Spanish.

“We are very excited to offer these highly requested workshop topics to our patrons and the greater Westchester community,” said Justin Sanchez, Technology Librarian at GPL. “Greenburgh has been a leader in the Westchester library community in providing technology help and assistance. With these tools and resources, GPL can advance its goal of closing the digital divide.”

PLA Past President Maria McCauley remarked, “Public libraries continuously play a vital role in providing digital literacy tools and information to their communities. The expansion of this powerful collaboration with AT&T for the second year will ensure that even more families and communities can benefit from programs and resources that increase digital access and equity”.

PLA collaborated with AT&T to develop the digital literacy and Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) courses, which are freely available in English and Spanish through AT&T ScreenReady and PLA’s DigitalLearn.org.  Upcoming workshops will be held in person from August – December. The full schedule of classes can be found on the library’s website.
