Reading Out Loud: Read to Yourself!

by Cristina Ramos-Payne on 2020-12-28T10:16:22-05:00 | 0 Comments

When did you stop reading to your children? When they learned to read? When they turned ten?  When they started high school? What if we never gave up on that experience of reading out loud? Even if your children are grown, you can still read aloud to yourself!

Why read aloud? Studies have shown there are many benefits from the experience. In particular, it helps with reading comprehension and memory, a phenomenon known as the production effect. Unlike reading silently, when we read aloud we are more present to the experience. For myself, I’ve found that if I read a passage out loud from a particularly difficult text, I tend to understand it better.

That’s not to say it isn’t beneficial to listen to someone read. While the benefits aren’t as strong for the listener, actively listening to a story can lead to more intense and deeper information processing.

Next time you pick out a book to read or need to study for a test, try reading out loud!
