Check out Composers Unveiled, an organization founded by Woodlands High School student Joshua Lee. Through this initiative, Joshua hopes that musicians such as himself will explore a brand new repertoire of composers from diverse backgrounds, especially living composers. Communicating and working alongside a composer to fully understand their piece is an experience that is unlike any other. Through collaboration, musicians can strengthen the bond between themselves and help create a welcoming and supportive community.

Below are several compelling artists and albums recommended by Composers Unveiled to celebrate their musical exploration initiative. These selections offer a deeper understanding of the diverse experiences and perspectives in our community, showcasing the creativity and hard work behind their compositions.

Works to Listen to

Umoja, the Swahili word for Unity and the first principle of the African Diaspora holiday Kwanzaa, was composed as a simple song for women's choir. It embodied a sense of “tribal unity,” through the feel of a drum circle, the sharing of history through traditional “call and response” form and the repetition of a memorable sing-song melody.

The rhythm and dynamics of their sound is constantly and carefully manipulated, cooking up a sizzling, modern take on the musical style of Django Reinhardt, without losing the essence of the “gypsy jazz” legend.

Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is a concertante work for piano and orchestra by Sergei Rachmaninoff. It was premiered in 1934 with the composer as the soloist. The piece is based on a theme by the violinist Niccolò Paganini, which many composers used to showcase their superb technique.

Escaramuza, which signifies "skirmish" in the Spanish language, is inspired by the kachampa music of Andean Perú. Celebrating the pre-Hispanic Inca warrior, the kachampa dance is executed by athletic men who convey a triumphant, even joyful, spirit.
