Brave New World: Working & Learning from Home

We are in a Brave New World when it comes to remote access and working or learning from home. Many of us, for the first time, are finding ourselves working and learning in a whole new way with a need to access information differently. It is amazing how if we had to make this transition under normal circumstances it would have taken months to be up and running. And yet in a relatively short amount of time many of us have taken the leap and are working it out as we go. Highlighted below are free, online student and professional resources to help your transition. Some of these resources required a fee now they are easily accessible and free to use.

Renaissance myON® Reader is a student-centered, personalized literacy environment that gives students access to more than 6,000 enhanced digital books. Titles are dynamically matched to each individual student’s interests, grade and Lexile® reading level.
How to log into myON: 
1. Go to: www.myon.com
2. Click the login button at the top of the screen
3. Enter the following information on the login page
School name:  New York Reads (begin typing and click on the school from the drop-down menu)
Username: read
Password: books

Tech-Talk is a premier collection of articles and videos, written each week by top training experts for busy professionals and aspiring students. It helps people stay up to date in using technology and become better communicators in the workplace. Shared Results International is making TECH-TALK content available for free for students, teachers and patrons … for the duration of this crisis.

2. Click on Member Login

STEM Activities that Can Be Done at Home!
In the STEM Activity Clearinghouse, users can find high quality, vetted STEM activities that are appropriate for at home use.

SciStarter is an online community dedicated to improving the citizen science experience for project managers and participants.  Over 3,000 projects and events are searchable by location, scientific topic, and age level, and by joining SciStarter, members can track their contributions and provide valuable feedback. 

Publisher’s Weekly PW is an online book review format and publishing industry informational website. This site is temporarily offering free access to users.  

Codecademy is an online interactive platform that offers free coding classes in 12 different programming languages. This platform is free for basic learning. There is a fee for higher learning levels.  

OpenLearn Free learning from the Open University. This online university gives lessons for students and professionals. All courses are free and are specially focused on politics, arts, humanities and social sciences.

UMass-Boston OpenCourseWare UMass Boston OCW is a free and open educational resource for faculty, students, and self-learners. Whether you are a high school student preparing for college, a faculty member looking for ideas for a new course, or a community member researching a topic, you are likely to find something of interest in the UMass Boston OCW collection.

MIT OpenCourseWare This OCW is similar to UMass but offers resources from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  

Along with these open links the library provides a plethora of e-content that is easily accessed with your library card. Check out our online resources page for more great resources for parents/caregivers, kids, professionals or any avid learner!
