New Faces at the Greenburgh Library: Diana Farez

Meet Greenburgh Public Library's newest employee, Diana Farez! Diana began working at the Greenburgh Library as a Circulation Clerk in April but she is no stranger to libraries.

Diana was born in Equador and did not come to America until she was 11 years old. In Equador the library was not well known. There was a library in her town but she was unaware of its existence. When she came to this country her first experience with the library was that it was a place to get volunteer hours completed. “I started volunteering at the Ossining Public library in middle school to finish my Confirmation community service hours.  I enjoyed it so much and eventually was hired as a page. A year after that I became a part-time clerk working in the children’s library. I would read books to the kids that I knew my younger sister would enjoy. For me, the library became a place to learn even beyond school.”

After high school Diana studied at John Jay College and minored in Gender Studies. She was unsure what she wanted to do. Being a lawyer sounded appealing but she was still not convinced it was the right career choice. Diana decided to take the test to become a Paralegal to get a taste of what it would be like in the world of criminal justice. When she finished school she was still not sure if law was the right career choice. Diana then came across an ad for Paralegals needed in the National Guard. In 2013 she joined the Army National Guard, went to boot camp and worked as a Paralegal for 6 years in several different countries. “I truly enjoyed my work but did not want to continue with the military. I also really wanted to come home to be with my family. When I returned home I remembered my early experiences at the library and began looking for a full time job back in libraries. Now I am full-time at Greenburgh but still work part-time in my original library in Ossining.”

“Greenburgh is a busy library. I enjoy the pace and enjoy working with the patrons and staff. I also like using the library’s e-content and love the downloadable music service that we provide. I can download 5 songs each week and I really enjoy what is available. Freegal is the first streaming service I started using and now I use Hoopla a lot too. I love listening to the Great Courses. Hoopla also has a lot of movies that are not main stream but are certainly interesting to watch. I do use Overdrive for books but I will still read physical copies when I am home.”

“The first book that got me into reading is Lirael by Garth Nix I was 12 years old. So I came late to my love of reading.  For me it was all about fantasy, different worlds, being transported to different universes and reading about unusual people that an author has created. I am currently reading The Millennium series by Stieg Larsson. I am now up to the new books continued by David Lagercrantz and I think he has done a pretty good job. I recommend the whole series.”

When asked about her future in library service she replies; “One of the things that I took away from a recent conference I attended was thinking about taking my library career further. I am not sure I am ready to start now but it is an exciting option for the future.”
