The Care and Keeping of Books: How to Keep a Library Book

Advice for helping your library books stay happy and healthy:

  • When you take out your book, bring along a cozy waterproof bag for it to snuggle in. And you can reuse the bag to bring the book back.

  • Books like the smell of soap. Wash your hands before opening your book.

  • Please don’t feed the books. Crumbs go right to their spines.

  • Bookmarks work better for keeping your place than fingers, cell phones, popsicle sticks, pens, unpaid bills, or uncashed checks.

  • Please don’t offer drinks to your books.

  • I know it’s hard when you’re reading the latest thriller, but turn the pages gently.

  • While you're reading, give your pets a chew toy to play with on the other side of the room.

  • Keep a notebook handy if you need to write down something interesting that you read. Writing in library books is like giving them a tattoo. We can never completely get the marks out.

  • If a book falls to pieces in spite of your best efforts, please let us know. We have the supplies to mend them!
