Birthplace of the World-Renowned Cocktail (First Concocted and Given Its Name Here in 1776)

The birthplace of the cocktail c.1900

This view of Main Street (Tarrytown Rd) looks east of the railroad toward White Plains, N.Y. The Ledger House on the left gave the village its claim to being the birthplace of that celebrated modern libation, the cocktail. According to legend, French and Colonial officers often gathered in this tavern during the Revolutionary War. The barmaid, Betsy, frequently garnished their drinks with the tailfeathers of chickens appropriated by the colonials from Tory hen coops in the neighborhood.

Flag Day, June 14, 1914, Elmsford, NY

This view of Main Street (Tarrytown Road) looks west of the Railroad toward Tarrytown. The village name- adopted in 1870- was inspired by a mammoth elm tree nearly 30' in circumference, which had been a landmark since revolutionary times.
