Local History

The Model T Ford is stopped a few feet west of the intersection of Saw Mill River Road, Jackson Avenue and Ravensdale Road

The river is flooding in this 1927 scene. A bridge at this location now carries Ravensdale Road over the Saw Mill River Parkway.

In 1927, just prior to Saw Mill River Parkway construction, Ravensdale Road was a dirt road crossing the railroad tracks.

The Saw Mill River Road and Jackson Avenue intersection can be seen in the background.

In November 1930, the Grace Episcopal Church was moved from its original location on lower Main Street in the Hastings business district to the south side of upper Main Street near Broadway.

Note that the steeple has been removed to clear wires along the route. The property vacated by the Church is now Boulanger Plaza.

This unique police booth and fire alarm center was a familiar sight in Hastings for many years

The solid concrete base protected the police officers from the heavy flow of traffic at the intersection of Warburton Avenue and Main Street. This photograph was taken in 1928.

Protection Engine Company No. 1, chartered in 1877, is shown in front of their fire house on Constant Street (now Warburton Avenue)

Originally formed as a vigilante group to protect local citizens from roving bands of hoodlums, the Hastings Protection Association switched its attention to firefighting after a major fire destroyed a sugar refinery in 1875. Bricks salvaged from the refinery were used to build the first fire headquarters.
