The first Hartsdale Fire Company Headquarters was situated near the Four Corners on Central Avenue. The motorized fire truck in the foreground was a Thomas motor car adapted to carry firefighting equipment
The hand truck was painted white (an unusual color for the time) so that it would be more visible in the dark of the night. By 1910, the fire company had also added another four-wheeled cart equipped with two 50-gallon chemical units (right in photo)
By 1925, the members of the fire company could no longer raise enough private funds to continue operations. The citizens voted to reorganize the fire company under the auspices of the Fire Commissioners and to support the operations with tax money. A study conducted by the commissioners recommended new equipment and a new firehouse. In the early 1960's a second firehouse was built on West Hartsdale Avenue to cover an expanded district. Paid and volunteer firefighters now carry on the proud tradition.
