New Faces: Justin Sanchez

Justin Sanchez is a new Reference Librarian at Greenburgh Public Library. He is new to the field of librarianship, having just graduated in the Spring of 2020 and we are happy to have him as part of our staff.

Justin loved learning as a kid. He always had a passion for figuring out the meaning of things, taking things apart, putting them back together and finding out what makes them tick. Knowing this about himself, he thought historical studies was his calling and went for a degree in History at Mercy College. While in school he won an award for best undergrad research paper about the decline of the MTA/subways during the 70s and 80s, how this greatly affected people with low incomes and how the increase of white flight caused a huge deficit in Manhattan. This award only further cemented his love of research, so he continued to spend his waking hours at the library.

“My history professor and my mentor at the time, pushed me to broaden my career outlook. I had a heavy passion for research and originally looked at archiving and historical documents as a career path. Then I investigated libraries and helping the public. I had a job at City college for a while and was working at a tennis club at the same time. A lot of things I was doing as a front desk supervisor translated to helping patrons as you would in a library. I also conducted a lot of instruction when customers needed help, downloading apps, and looking up information. After COVID this became intensive helping people online.” The sum of these experiences led Justin to choose public libraries and patron services as his vocation.

Justin is now working reference services and is in charge of GPL’s new collection, the Library of Things. In his short time here, he has established the circulation of laptops, firesticks, hotspots, and has revamped the library’s museum pass lending program. These are hot items that have seen tremendous circulation and patron interest. Justin gives both this new collection and the patrons that use them wonderful support.

Going back to Justin's undergrad experiences, the other passion that came from his intensive research studies was a love of engineering and infrastructure. Justin is a big game player and loves to play ones that incorporate building and management.

He started gaming when he was about four or five years old. A favorite uncle introduced him to online gaming, and he was hooked. “Some board games I like are Catan, Risk and Monopoly, but I am really into online gaming. Right now, I am playing Cities: Skylines. It is along the lines of SimCity. I am passionate about serving new adults and I intend to create more programs geared toward gaming topics that this generation is familiar with which will hopefully draw them back into the library.”

Along with gaming, Justin is also an avid music lover and concert goer. The following is a list of some of his favorite musical artists accessible through the Library’s digital streaming app, Hoopla.
