When you think about some of the best movies you have ever seen, do you ever wonder what the director was thinking when he created the shots or how the costume designer decided to dress the actors? Do you ever wish that some of those older great films, were available with updated and remastered audio and video? If you find yourself asking these questions, I have just the film collection to recommend-- The Criterion Collection. The Criterion Collection publishes classic and contemporary film “in editions that offer the highest technical quality and award-winning, original supplements.”
The library’s physical collection of Criterion films is housed on the first floor of the building, in the DVD collection. You may also access Criterion films with your library card, on the digital streaming service Kanopy (learn how to create a Kanopy account here).
For September, the library has acquired two new Criterion releases for its physical collection, both coming of age stories. The first is Cold Water, a French drama by renowned director Olivier Assayas (it has been digitally restored, and includes interviews with both Assayas as well as the cinematographer). The second is a contemporary film from 2011-- The Tree of Life-- starring Hunter McCracken, Brad Pitt and Jessica Chestain, and directed by Terrence Malick (includes digitally remastered audio and video, an extended version of the film, documentary, as well as interviews with the actors and composer).
